The following obituary for William's son John appeared in The Portsmouth Times of Portsmouth OH on Satudary, 25 March 1876, Page 3, Column. It contains useful family information.

This gentleman, after a short illness, died last Monday night, March 20th, 1876, and his remains were conveyed to their resting place last Wednesday afternoon, followed by a large concourse of friends. Mr. McDowell was born in Frederick county, Virginia, near Winchester, September 24th, 1798. His father, Dr. William McDowell, was a native of Ireland. In the year 1806 the parents of John McDowell removed to Chillicothe, Ohio, which was then the State capital. His father, who had at one time been an itinerant Methodist minister, kept open house for traveling preachers, and here the son became acquainted with the celebrated Lorenzo Dow. The early inculcations of the pioneer bishops and ministers and their effect, and he united with the M. E. Church in the year 1818.
In September, 1820, he was married to Mary W. Jefferson, and in December they left Chillicothe in wagons, arriving here January 1st, 1881, intending to remove to Illinois. His wife survives him.
Three years ago, in writing a sketch of his life, he informed us of the reason that led him to remain in Portsmouth. He said "I came here in wagons, January 1st, 1821, with the intention of removing to Illinois, but was detained by ice until spring. In the meantime I opened my goods and commenced the mercantile business, which proved so profitable, that when spring arrived I concluded to remain."
Mr. McDowell instituted the first Methodist Sunday school in this city in the year 1825. He was also one of the pioneers who adopted the Sunday School Union, over thirty-five years ago, and by his decease there remains but two living, Rev. Dr. Burr and Joseph Riggs. He was devotedly attached to the church, and was a communicant of Bigelow. He Held several offices of trust. He was one of the second Infirmary Directors elected after the organization of the county; he was County Commissioner when the first turnpike loan was advanced, was once Mayor of the city, and at the time of his death was a member of the City Infirmary Board, of which he was clerk.

James McDowell [c1784 - c1825] married Emily MNU. We assign his death year as about 1825 based on his final appearance in 1824 in the personal tax lists. The fact that he continues to appear in the land book through 1831 with Samuel McDowell likely relates to the processing of his estate. His wife Emily replaces him in these records in 1834. James appeared with Emily and some of his brothers in the following census records.

Following the Civil War, a Southern Claims Commission was established and "Settled Case Files" were approved. John McDowell served as a witnes for claims made by Richard Sykes and Isaac Sykes. The date of their respect files is 20 March 1872 and we abstract several relevant passages naming John. It's not clear from these and other records that he remained in Richmond during the Civil War or fought for the confederacy.

Claim of Richard Sykes of Henrico County
That, by the following named persons, the claimant expects to prove that from the beginning of hostilities against the United States, to the end thereof, his sympathies were constantly with the cause of the United States; that he never, of his own free will and accord, did anything, or offered, or sought, or attempted to do anything, by word or deed, to injure said cause or retard its success, and that he was at all times ready and willing, when called upon, or if called upon, to aid and assist the cause of the Union, or its supporters, so far as his means and power and circumstances of the case permitted:
John McDowell of Richmond VA.

Thereupon, the said John McDowell being about the age of 46 years, by occupation a Boiler Maker and resident of the County of Henrico and State of Virginia having been by me (by virtue of my office aforesaid) first cautioned and sworn to testify the truth, the whole truth and nothing by the truth, in the matter of the claim aforesaid, I did carefully examine the said John McDowell apart from all the other witnesses named in this case, and he did thereupon depose, testify and say, as follows, viz: the testimony I have given in the case of Isaac Sykes applies word for wordk to that of Richard Sykes. I desire to refer to that. I have no doubt of Richard Sykes loyalty to the United States. John McDowell.

John McDowell, an Irishman, and Wm James & Richard Sykes testify to the ownership of the property & to the taking by the soldiers. That the Army was then provided with the usual Army supplies is doubtless true & items 8, 9, & 10 were taken lawlessly & by men depredation.
