We have grouped family trees together according to either the initial ancestor in the tree or their location as described in more detail with each link. To seach for a specific person, go to each McDowell link and examine the Descendants Table which appears near the top. One can also search a given file using the "Find on Page" function for a given browser.
Central Virgina McDowells: This family tree contains the Y-DNA proven tree of the descendants of a John McDowell of Amelia County VA and a James McDowell of Prince George County VA. Their descendants moved South along the route of I-95 into North Carolina and westward into Kentucky. Based on this geographical location of being centered around Richmond VA, we have chosen to call this family tree the Central Virginia McDowells.
Upper Shenandoah Valley McDowells: This file contains the family tree of Ephraim McDowell and his famous descendants, many of whom populated Kentucky at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century.
Murtough McDowell Descendants: This file contains the family tree of Murtough McDowell whose descendants moved to Halifax County VA, Lee County VA, and finally to Claiborne County TN and Pulaski County KY.
Western North Carolina McDowells: This file contains the family trees of the McDowells who populated Mecklenburg County in North Carolina and became the Pleasant Garden and Quaker Meadow McDowells of western North Carolina.
West Virginia McDowells: This file contains the family trees of the McDowells who lived in Greenbrier and Monroe counties of Virginia prior to the formation of the State of West Virginia. Many of the descendants moved to Kentucky and populated that state at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century.
Kentucky McDowells: This file contains the family trees of all the McDowells listed in the 1800 tax lists of Kentucky not otherwise present in other files. Links by county to the other files are included to enhance navigation.
Other North Carolinians: This file contains the family trees of a collection of McDowells not otherwise included in other files and they are catalogued by county.
