MARYLAND MCDOWELLS

Resolving the genealogy of the McDowells in Maryland during the Eighteenth Century is hampered by the lack of data, especially deed records. It is also hampered by the fact that family members move back and forth across the state lines of Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The latter is true for the Nineteenth Century as well. For anyone searching for an ancestor in Maryland, we suggest that you search our databases for the States of Delaware and Pennsylvania. When appropriate, we put a link in this Maryland database for residents of those two states.
For the Nineteenth Century, we report on the various McDowell families in Maryland through about 1850 when necessary.
McDowell records in other family trees at this website including Delaware and Pennsylvania can be accessed in the Table of Contents.
In reviewing the various records of the McDowells in Cecil County MD and in Lancaster County PA, it is important to remember that the boundary between the two states was in dispute for several decades and was resolved by the Mason-Dixon Line. Thus, any records involving these two locations must take this fact into account since a record from Maryland might actually be for someone located in modern-day Pennsylvania and vice versa.

The official border between Maryland and Pennsylvania was established between 1763 and 1767 with the survey of the Mason-Dixon Line. The final boundary was agreed upon on October 18, 1767, marking the end of a long and often violent dispute between the two colonies.

1813 Will of Hamilton McDowell

Source: BaltimoreWB12:181-182

In the name of God, Amen, I, Hamilton McDowell of Baltimore County in the State of Maryland being in perfect health of body and of sound mind, memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death, and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form following, that is to say.
First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my executrix herein afternamed and after my debts and funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows.
I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Jane McDowell of Baltimore County the entire of my estate both Real and Personal during her widowhood, and in case of her marriage and after my wifes thirds are taken out; I give and bequeath unto my children Jane, Arabella, Sarah, Mary, and Hamilton all the rest and residue of my estate, both real and personal, to be equally divided to them, their heirs and assigns forever, in equal share and share alike.
And whereas the property which I now possess hath been chiefly acquired by the joint industry and frugality of my dear wife and myself, and thinking some addition to her dower or thirds necessary, the better to enable her to live with convenience and comfort, I do therefore give as aforesaid unto my wife during her natural life provided she remains a widow all Interest in my property estate, whether real or personal that I now, or may hereafter possess.
And the same at her demise to my children as aforesaid. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my dear wife Jane McDowell to be sole executrix of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this, and none other, to be my last will and testament. We believe that this William McDowell is the William McDowell of Cecil County MD who married Ruth Ann Roberts. This assignment is based on the following circumstanial evidence.
  • The consistent spelling of the name as Mackdowell or Macdowell over several generations in the records, although this could be a concidence due to the typical spelling of names.
  • The fact that the generational births and deaths are consistent for the sequence William Mackdowell [Unknown - c1686] => John Mackdowell [Unknown - c1724] => William Mackdowell [c1705 - 1733] => James Mackdowell [1725 - 1782].
  • The fact that James Mackdowell of Cecil County is involved in a Calvert County land dispute in which his father is named as William and his grandfather as John, perfectly matching our presumptive genealogical sequence. We also note the boundary dispute between Cecil County MD and Lancaster County PA — resolved by the Mason-Dixon line — in that James appears on the tax records of Lancaster County PA but is named as being from Cecil County MD in the land dispute.
We note that John Dixon of Calvert County in his Will indicates that he leased land from a William McDowell which is consistent with the 1715 Will of John Mackdowell.

Will of John Dixon of Calvert County dated 14 April 1739 and probated 30 April 1741. Item: I give and bequeath to Sarah my dearly beloved wife and her heirs and to my son Robert and his heirs one part of my right of a lease made to me by William Mackdowell: Vizt __ part or tract bounded beginning at the Bay running West to the Great Swamp and running down it sd Swamp to a small Rivolet or run from thence to the Bay to be Equally divided betwixt them and I ordain Sarah my wife and her heirs to have the Southmost part of it above said Tract of Land for the half, nevertheless be it excepted if they their heirs or either of them shall not sell, or dispose of any part or parcel of the above bequeathed Land to any person or persons during the Term of ye said Lease. Item: I give and bequeath to my Daughter Jane and her heirs a parcel out of the above mentioned Tract of Land lying to the North of a small Run from thence to the Great Road (Selling excepted as above said). Item: I give to my son Garrard and his heirs the remaining part of the above said Tract of Land together with the Main Swamp to the Great Road (Except before excepted).[KM Abstract]

We believe that the following James McDowell is this James McDowell and that the Florence who signs the second deed as a McDowell could have been a McDowell who married Alexander Hutchison [1682 - 1748 PMT], the son of David Hutchison and Agness MNU, or else the person who set up the deed misidentified her. PMT identifies her as being born about 1682 in Antrim Ireland. We note that William McDowell, the brother of James, married a Rebecca Hutchison, thus providing more connectivity. In 1800, the court ordered a yearly valuation of the lands of William McDowell deceased as related to the guardianship of his two children Samuel and Rebecca by John Wiley. We note that the plantation or land on the Main Road and the plantation near the mouth of the Elk River are named in the 1791 Will of Rebecca Broom, their grandmother, as being bequeathed and devised to their father William. Based on the 1798 deed NewCastleDBS2;498 and the 1814 deed NewCastleDBO3:241 along with the Will, we note that Rebecca devises 1/4 part of the Griffin plantation to her daughter Rebecca and 1/4 part to her son William. This likely means that she possessed 1/2 part of the tract. We suspect that a brother, Samuel Hutchinson, possessed the other 1/2 part since the deeds refer to him as deceased and in possession of the land. We note also that Samuel Hutchinson served as security for the Administration Bond of Rebecca Hutchinson McDowell for her husband William in 1766.
