Green Hill and Martha Ann Scarlett

Green Hill was born about 1785 in North Carolina.  His census address in 1850 is Randolph County, NC where his age is not listed.  However, it is listed in the 1860 census of Randolph County, NC. He has obviously been married at least twice. In the 1840 census of Randolph County, there is a John Hill (of Green).  The “of Green” is intentionally written in after John’s name in the census.  His full name turns out to be John H. Hill born about 1813 and he married Mary Gibson, daughter of Revolutionary War Pensioner Thomas Gibson. Obviously, Green Hill was married prior to his marriage to Martha Ann Scarlett in 1848. In the first marriage, they name one of their sons Green Hill who was born in 1832 in Randolph County and died on December 24, 1864 as a result of injuries in the Civil War.

Green Hill married a second time to Martha Ann Scarlet on October 11, 1848 in Randolph County.  They had at least one child Samuel Hill born in 1851.  Green Hill does not leave a will but he dies in 1863 in Randolph County, NC and there are estate papers on file in the State Archives, Raleigh, NC. A John H. Hill purchases of the estate but there is no genealogy information in the files.

This Green Hill family is NOT the Green Hill who witnessed the Sion Hill and Starage Lee marriage in Johnston County.  He would have been only about 15 years old.  However, it is possible that he is a younger brother to Sion Hill.
